 The leading global organisations for the certification of product safety are Underwriters Laboratories (UL) based in Northbrook, Illinois, and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) based in Ghent. All products must be certified in accordance with the local applicable standards for the market in a given country. This means that IEC standards apply in Europe and large areas of the world, whilst UL standards apply in the USA.
