This article describes carrier boards already developed using the new Qseven Computer-on- Module standard, based on 45nm technology with a maximum power consumption of 12W and a compact 70mm x 70mm square module, plus the forthcoming mobile version.

In the last five years, the embedded computer market has changed greatly due to the implementation of the Computer-on-Module (COM) philosophy in many applications. Using Computer-on-Modules it is possible to reduce time to market and save costs both in the design and re-design phase. The user has the choice to scale or update the range of performances of the application simply by using different COMs on the same application-specific carrier board, with the possibility to use a multiple supplier philosophy for cost- and-delivery optimisation. Another advantage of this philosophy is that customers can focus on their applications, the know-how for which goes on the carrier board and in the software, while the CPU know-how is on the module which they need not care about. So there is a real separation of know how between the carrier board (customer know-how) and COM (board vendor).

SECO has thirty years of experience in designing and manufacturing computing boards with a history based on standards (like PC/104) and custom-designed single board computers (SBC).Additionally, the Italian company’s success in satisfying customer needs through close co-operation with partners like Intel (Affiliate Member in the Intel ECA), VIA, AMD/ATI, NVidia STMicroelectronics and Microsoft (Windows Embedded Partner) has influenced COM-based solutions.More and more existing…
