Call for industrial research in Embedded Computing Systems
With about €100 million public funding from the 22 participating “ARTEMIS Member States” and the European Commission and at least a €100 million contribution from industry and research organisations, the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking (JU) has published its Call 2010 for R&D proposals. The Call should generate an R&D activity in excess of €200 million. The ARTEMIS JU, a Europe-wide public-private research partnership, addresses embedded computer systems that – while running almost unnoticed by users – have a big impact on our daily lives and improve the performance of all kinds of machines: from cars, planes and phones, to factories, washing machines and televisions. Their impact goes beyond improving the innovation capability and competitiveness of industry; they also deliver real solutions to society’s concerns about energy use, safety and healthcare.
"The Call for proposals confirms that ARTEMIS has consolidated its key role for European research in the area of embedded computing systems", said Eric Schutz, Executive Director of the autonomous ARTEMIS-JU. "Despite the aftermath of the financial crisis, the close and unique collaboration between industry and public authorities is bearing its fruit. ARTEMIS proves that a new way of managing industrial research programmes in Europe is possible by pooling resources from Member States and the Commission and by engaging industry in the process."
98 % of computing devices are embedded in all kinds of electronic equipment and machines. Computers are now present in everyday devices like mobile phones, credit cards, cars and planes or places like homes, offices and factories. Forecasts predict that more than 40 billion embedded processors will be in use by 2020. These are the facts that underline the importance of the ARTEMIS initiative and the potential impact the results can have on European competitiveness.
Dr Klaus Grimm, President of ARTEMIS Industry Association and Chair of the ARTEMIS-JU Governing Board, sees much interest in the ARTEMIS approach: “It’s the third time a combined effort with companies, research institutes and SMEs together with the EU and national public funding authorities,” he says. “In ARTEMIS we have a common strategic research agenda, developed in both a top-down and bottom-up approach, integrating all potential stakeholders.”
The second call for proposals in 2009 resulted in 13 high-end research projects starting early this year. This call follows the successful first ARTEMIS call 2008, that supports 12 Projects that started in January 2009. The next ARTEMIS-JU Call for 2010, the third one, opens on February 26th and is open to all relevant participants. Participant should collaborate with at least 3 independent entities from 3 ARTEMIS Member States. It uses a 2-step approach: a mandatory but non-gating Project Outline, followed by a Full Project Proposal. The proposals should be focused on industrial research and technology development in an application context.
