Still wondering how virtualization can help you building the future?
By Jacques Brygier, SYSGO
This article examines a microkernel-based approach which can extend the efficiency improvements yielded by virtualization in the server world to the much more heterogeneous field of embedded systems, with its special real-time, safety, and security requirements.
The general performance enhancement on the part of embedded systems due to hardware evolution has gone hand-in-hand with an increase in software complexity: applications which have the capacity to fully exploit the potential of currently available platforms are no longer comparable with the compact, straightforward programs that were once designed for use with the classic embedded operating systems. They frequently consist of various components which, more or less independently of one another, realize different aspects of the overall functions. If these subsystems come from different providers and work with different operating systems, the system software for embedded systems must itself simultaneously be able to cater for all these operating systems...
